The Shih Tzu is New York’s most beloved dog breed, U.S. News

America’s favorite dog breed may be the Chihuahua, but here in New York, we love Shih Tzus most of all.

In fact, the Chihuahua doesn’t even crack New Yorkers’ top five dog breeds, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 360 Reviews ranking released this week.

Residents of the Empire State prefer the Shih Tzu’s friendly demeanor; long, flowing coat; and sweet disposition to the compact, lively and bold Chihuahua.

360 Reviews examined more than 811,000 data points for its “Most Popular Dog Breed in Each State” report.

Across the United States, the Shih Tzu came in at No. 5 among the most popular breeds. Rounding out the top five are the French Bulldog at No. 2, Golden Retriever at No. 3 and German Shepherd at No. 4.

Here’s the Top 5 dog breeds in New York state, according to 360 Reviews.

  2. Yorkshire Terrier
  3. French Bulldog
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Goldendoodle

“We analyzed a large database of dog breeds from across the U.S. to uncover the most popular dog breeds nationwide and in each state,” said Quiana Darden-King, U.S. News’ 360 Reviews senior insurance editor.

New York’s neighbors are mixed in terms of their taste in dog breeds. Folks in New Jersey also prefer the Shih Tzu, while Pennsylvanians prefer the German Shepherd most. Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont are Golden Retriever states.
