On any given day at Positions Dance Studio in Babylon, you’ll find anyone from toddlers prancing in tutus, to a couple working on wedding choreography.
But, Kelly Peckholdt, 29, the owner of Positions, says her favorite is the “Dance Abilities” program for children with special needs.
“They are truly joyful to be in the dance class,” she said.
Twice a week, Positions hosts the Dance Abilities class, where children ranging in ages can come together and dance in a safe environment.
And the program has been growing.

The idea for a class dedicated to those with special needs stemmed from the previous owner of Positions, who had a child with Down syndrome.
Now, five years later, there are 11 students in the studio at 264 Deer Park Avenue.
“It is a great therapy for the kids,” said Peckholdt. “They love it and the kids in the class are really supportive of each other.”
Peckholdt says she sees growth in the dancers as well.
For instance, 12-year-old Ryan of Babylon who is autistic and not very verbal. After a few classes, he slowly began connecting with the music and can even be seen shaking his hips and feet, she said.
“Whenever [Ryan’s mom] looks in window and I look at her we both cry,” said Peckholdt.
