Town demolishes former used car dealer lot by Swan River Preserve

|

The Town of Brookhaven continues to spruce up the area surrounding the Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue.

Earlier this month, the town demolished an old used car dealership at 550 East Main Street, adjacent to the environmentally sensitive area.

The .28-acre property, which had an onsite trailer/office and asphalt parking lot, is directly east of the preserve and across the street from the Swan River Lake.

“Cleaning this property has been our plan for many years,” said Town Supervisor Ed Romaine after the disposal.

Over those years, Brookhaven has been working toward refurbishing this area by purchasing the land surrounding the river and lake for preservation.

The last part of the plan was to remove the dilapidated lot to open up more space for nature, ultimately protecting the nearby waterways.

This project was a collaborative effort with the town, Suffolk County and the Focus East Patchogue group.

“This completes our plan to return this entire parcel to open space,” said Brookhaven Councilman Neil Foley. “I thank Suffolk County for partnering with the Town on this project and Focus East Patchogue for their commitment to improve the community they serve.”
