Grace Ryan, a second-grade teacher at John S. Hobart Elementary School, piled about 1,000 books in her Halloween-decorated trunk yesterday to hand out for free as part of the inaugural “Trunk or Treat” event held yesterday in the south parking lot of William Floyd High School.
Ryan, who picks up the books through an organization called The Book Fairies in Freeport, said the books were for “pre-K all the way up to chapter books.” She was delighted when a youngster dressed up as a dinosaur picked out a “Dinosaurs” book. (He held onto the book with a big smile on his face.)
Ryan’s vehicle was among about decorated 20 trunks giving out candy and other goodies at the event, which was sponsored by state Sen. Monica Martinez. They included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Mastic Beach Fire Department, non-profits and residents.
Daniel Montana’s graveyard-themed pickup won the best-decorated trunk award.
Montana, of Mastic, brought his two sons, Cayden, 2, and Liam, 7, along. Liam attends Hobart.
“It’s for the kids,” Montana said of his effort.
Martinez, who was dressed as a bumblebee and led a “Cha-Cha Slide” dance with the crowd, has put on similar events in Brentwood for what will be the fifth year. She called it “a great way to bring the community together and make this safe for our children.”
