These twin brothers have been the heart and soul of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School athletics for the last four years.
But don’t take our word for it.
Seniors Jack and Joey Collins were both just recognized by the Port Jeff school board for their ability to compete at the highest levels while inspiring each other, and their community.
Jack is best-known for his playmaking abilities as a quarterback for Port Jefferson, where he was named a “Gridiron Great” twice by Newsday. His accuracy and arm strength helped him set school records for completions (143) and passing yards (2,261).
As an All-County and third team All-State player, Jack also became the first Port Jeff player in school history to be named Most Valuable Player in Suffolk County Divison IV football.
And while Jack would be tossing the pigskin, Joey was hitting the wrestling mats.
“Joey Collins lights up the wrestling room when he enters,” said Port Jeff wrestling coach Mike Maletta. “He has been a member of PJ Nation for four years now and has inspired each and every athlete on our team. He has wrestled in many matches, has won some and lost some, but has dared to wrestle and pursue success.”
One of his most recent wins came during the annual Bob Armstrong Memorial Cup, where he pinned a wrestler from Riverhead High School.
Over the years, the support the brothers have shown one another has been remarkable, says the district’s athletic director, Dr. Danielle Turner.
“Jack and Joey have changed the way many of their peers, teammates, and teachers view the world,” said Turner. “Their character, commitment and dedication to Port Jefferson athletics and to their community is without equal.”
