Police are actively searching for two missing kayakers in Shinnecock Bay after the girlfriend of one of the men reported him missing Saturday night in Hampton Bays.
Southampton Town Police said 26-year-old Shane Garcia of Hampton Bays was reported missing by his girlfriend about 8:44 p.m. after he failed to return from a kayaking trip earlier in the day. Officers later found Garcia’s work van parked at the end of Shinnecock Avenue.
Garcia had sent his girlfriend a photo of himself and a friend, Aaron Montemarano, 24, while the two were kayaking near the Ponquogue Bridge, police said.
A search of Shinnecock Bay and the surrounding area yielded no results as of late Saturday. Garcia is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, 185 pounds, and was last seen wearing a gray jacket and shirt, black pants and tan Nike sneakers.
Police believe Montemarano was with Garcia at the time he went missing.
