There’s an extra bit of patriotic flair in the air along Montauk Highway in Shirley and Mastic.
About 50 American flags were installed today along utility poles on either side of the highway as part of ongoing beautification efforts sponsored the Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics and Shirley.
“It’s so exciting,” said chamber President Beth Wahl. “I couldn’t believe it when I drove down Montauk Highway today.”
The line of flags, which were installed by East End Sign Design in Mastic, starts at the South Port Shopping Center in Shirley and extends on about every other pole to Sterling Place in Mastic. The Mastic Fire Department Fire Police assisted with traffic control during the installation.
Wahl said the effort cost several thousand dollars and that the group would like to expand the project in the future by doing seasonal decorations.
“We’re going to do a phase two starting at around Burger King … and hopefully continue further east on Montauk if we can.”
