Video: That summer day when a whale family gave boaters a show in Long Island waters

|

It was the show of a lifetime.

And the group of boaters who witnessed the extended whale sighting were mindful to record it and share it with the world.

It all unfolded on an August day about 15 miles off the coast of Montauk, with as many as five whales playfully sharing a meal with a flock of seagulls.

On the boat recording was Instagram user Brian Walsh, who promptly posted a breathtaking video of his group’s encounter. The Aug. 22 video has since collected hundreds of likes and tons of views.

The ocean encounter garnered widespread media coverage and the Greater Long Island article about it was one of our most widely read stories of 2023.

Among the boaters with Walsh were some very excited children.

“Look at the size of that blowhole,” one of the kids exclaimed. Another child said: “I thought they were going to eat us for a second!”

“Definitely the coolest thing I saw all day on the internet!” @b_dollin said in the comments section of the post.

“Majestic! Can’t believe how close you are,” added @danmanci.
