Wantagh Schools puts landmark Beech Street building up for sale

|

It looks like the Wantagh School District is downsizing.

In order to raise money for future capital improvement projects, the school board recently announced it has decided to sell one of its six buildings.

The good news is, no students will be displaced.

Wantagh last used the well-known property at 1865 Beech Street back in 1982 for administration offices.

Shortly after, the privately owned Wee Friends Nursery moved in and leased the facility for preschool programs and summer camps, which went on for 40 years.

But that agreement ended in August, and the big red building has sat vacant ever since.

Now, the gates are locked, the weeds need to be whacked, and all that’s left are memories from those who live in the area.

The district tells Greater Long Island there were several factors that led to the decision to sell, including the “substantial” cost it would take to make necessary repairs to the landmark structure. (The school board had been weighing the option to renovate the structure, then either lease the building our again, or use it for its own universal pre-k program.)

Currently, Wantagh’s eight UPK classes are spread out at its three elementary schools.

So what’s next? A search for a buyer will begin. Once a deal is in place, the district will then hold a public vote.

The sale of the property cannot be completed until approved by Wantagh School District voters.
