A new memorial installation aimed at healing through conversation is coming to Sunken Meadow State Park.
The Long Island chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP-LI) will unveil a “Wind Phone” on Sunday, May 18, at Field #3 in Kings Park. It’s the first of its kind to be installed in a Long Island state park.
“This serene, thought-provoking installation will offer a private space where individuals can ‘call’ and speak to loved ones they’ve lost — a symbolic gesture of healing, connection, and remembrance,” organizers said.
The Wind Phone dedication will take place at 1 p.m., following AFSP-LI’s annual Construction Hike for Hope, which begins at 9 a.m. The installation is being placed on the south side of the East Creek Bridge in Field #3.
Inspired by the original Wind Phone in Otsuchi, Japan — a telephone booth created to cope with loss following the 2011 tsunami — the installation encourages people to “express feelings left unsaid,” said Dennis Duca of the AFSP-LI.
The event coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month and aims to create space for reflection and support. Here’s more about wind phones.
