Athenian Greek Taverna — a Commack staple always crowded for lunch and dinner — has abruptly closed its doors after more than three decades in business, catching many loyal customers off guard.
The restaurant announced the news in a social media post at 8 a.m. today, Friday, thanking patrons for their support over the years.
“After 30+ wonderful years in business, we have made the decision to close this chapter as we move onto new future endeavors,” the post read. “We are deeply grateful for your loyalty, trust, and support throughout the years. It has truly been an honor to serve you.”
No specific reason for the closure was given.
Athenian was posting lunch specials as of yesterday on Instagram, with a recent post about a May 27 patio party. That all left customers further confused in comments.
No one at Athenian was available to answer phone calls at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The popular Greek eatery built a strong following in Commack, where it became known for its lively atmosphere and consistently busy dining room, with diners sprawled at tables across its parking lot daily during the COVID era.
The business originally started across Jericho Turnpike in a smaller storefront near Emilio’s Pizza before expanding into its current, larger location, in 2019 where it grew into one of the area’s go-to destinations for Mediterranean cuisine.
The location also went underwent extensive renovations to its bar area just a few years ago.
It’s owned by Greek-American brothers John and Chef Alex Homenides, who built Athenian around traditional, family-style cooking, according to the restaurant’s website.
The brothers prepared dishes “Yiayia’s way,” using fresh ingredients and recipes rooted in their heritage, the site reads.
