Keep Islip Clean is making a push for volunteers in the run-up to the group’s next big cleanup day on Sept. 17.

The group holds litter cleanup projects throughout the year, but the September event coincides with International Coastal Cleanup efforts. This offers an opportunity to turn the local efforts into worldwide action.

They’re also quick to remind the efforts go way beyond beach cleanups.

“Beaches are the most popular locations chosen by volunteers,” said Nancy Cochran, the group’s executive director. “However, [Keep Islip Clean] is most effective when a variety of waterways are included in the tally, so I hope people will give some thought to choosing alternate locations, like streams and wetlands.”

Keep Islip Clean, an affiliate of the nationwide Keep America Beautiful, provides data collection material, instructions and cleanup supplies. Volunteers should call 631-224-2627 or keepislipclean@optonline.net to register for the Saturday, Sept. 17, event.
