The Bay Shore school board announced Thursday the district has extended superintendent Joseph Bond’s contract through the 2019-20 school year.

“Since taking over the helm of the Bay Shore schools, Mr. Bond has shown that he is the right person to lead our district,” said board president Guy Leggio. “As a board, we want to ensure the best possible outcome for all of our students, and one way to do that is to have continuity in leadership.

“We are confident that Mr. Bond will continue to move our district in the right direction.”

Bond has been superintendent since July 2015, when he was named interim superintendent. He was appointed superintendent in the spring of 2016. He will earn $245,000 for the upcoming 2017-18 school year, then $250,000 in 2018-19 and $255 in 2019-20, according to a district spokesperson.

Since coming to Bay Shore, Bond has overseen the creation of the district’s Family Engagement Program, the passing of two budgets that were under the cap and the continuation of construction at the former state Armory, reads Thursday’s announcement.

“Leading this district is an incredible blessing but also an awesome responsibility,” said Bond. “It is a responsibility I do not take lightly, but I welcome wholeheartedly.

“I look forward to working with the board, my team and the community over the next three years to continue the district’s tradition of high achievement and preparing our students for college and 21st century careers.”

Among future milestones for the district, Bond specifically mentioned completing construction of the dedicated Universal Pre-K facility at the Bay Shore Armory, “which will continue to make Bay Shore a destination location.”

“We will, as always, provide a cutting edge, well-rounded education for our students through programs like dual language and our International Baccalaureate diploma track,” Bond said. “Our focus will remain on developing the whole child and achieving the best possible outcome for each student.

“Bay Shore is a place where children are encouraged to dream, lead and achieve, and I am proud to be a part of the community.”
