Scenes from the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for L.I. luncheon in Bay Shore

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island marked Breast Cancer Awareness month Sunday with its annual appreciation and awareness luncheon at Captain Bill’s in Bay Shore.

“It’s a thank you to all that are involved in making our coalition such a great success,” said the group’s president, Margaret Campise.

This year’s guest speaker was Mikala Engeblad from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Engeblad studies tumors and, in particular, the contributions of the microenvironment in which the cancer cells arise and live, according to her profile on the laboratory website.

Aside from awareness and education efforts, the not-for-profit group, founded in 1992, helps Long Island women undergoing breast cancer treatment through its Lend a Helping Hand program.

The volunteers supply free goods and services such as whigs, house cleaning, transportation, medical co-payments and food, Campise previously told greaterbyshore.com.

“Whatever they need to make things a little bit easier while going through this trying time in their lives,” she said.

Campise emceed Sunday’s luncheon, during which she introduced singers Christopher Coughlin and Shamini Haque. They all appear in the photos below from greaterbayshore.com contributor Jennifer Mercurio of Lasting Impressions Photography.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and other dignitaries attended Sunday as well.
