Maggie Fitzpatrick was T-boned by a tractor trailer.
Clifford Hammond was hit by a car while walking across the street after his daughter’s wedding rehearsal dinner.
Each was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, and lived to tell about it.
But it took a small army to save each of their lives.On the night of Sept. 30, those armies, in this case a room full of first responders and hospital staffers, were recognized for their efforts coming to the rescue of both Fitzpatrick and Hammond.
It was Southside’s first annual Heroes Night at Southward Ho Country Club, and both accident victims were on hand to thank — and pal around with — the honorees. (See photos.)
“Without all of these players who we honored Friday night working together as a well-oiled team, these patients’ outcomes would be dramatically different,” said Dr. Michael Grossman, the chief of Southside’s trauma program. “We appreciate all of our local first responders for their partnership with us. All of us in the community and at Southside Hospital can be heroes to the patients that we touch every day.”
About 80 people in all were honored at Southward Ho, including members of the Commack Ambulance Company, West Sayville and Babylon fire departments, along with Suffolk County Police Department officers from the First and Fifth precincts.
