Tor Comics (Holtsville) – best for silver- and bronze-age collectors

Anyone with a gap in their silver age collection can probably fill it at Tor comics.

When owner Darrin Koch’s brother-in-law started up the shop in 1993, they wanted their store to feel like ones they would frequent.

“We wanted it to be more like an old-fashioned comic book store from the ’80s where we like to deal with a lot more silver age books and mainly comics,” Koch said. “We don’t really do toys. We like to do the old silver age and bronze age comics, not just the new books.”

Nearly every wall of the shop is plastered with brightly colored Batman, Flash, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and other issues from the mid ’50s through 1970, with some bronze age issues, running through the mid 80’s, on display as well.

Of course, Koch also carries new books for those interested in keeping up with the heroes of today. Doing this, especially last year, is the toughest challenge he faces regularly. “You’re talking about ordering six or seven hundred books a month.”

He also has a decent collection of current back issues, many of which he conveniently packages and sell in multiple issue runs for those who want to jump onto a series for a complete story arc. Scattered throughout the store, Koch also offers a scarce selection of Funko! pops, trading cards, and other collectables.
