Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be starting work soon on a two-story, comprehensive cancer center that hospital officials are hoping to open sometime in mid-2019.
News of the new center was announced this week.
The new facility will be adjacent to the north side of Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home, which, like Good Sam, is also run by Catholic Health Services of Long Island.
“We’re combining new technology and a streamlined process in a convenient location to make this the best possible experience for our patients and their families,” said the chair of the hospital’s cancer committee, Dr. Johnny Kao.
The $18 million renovation project will utilize nearly 25,000 square feet of unoccupied space at the nursing center campus, which is located at 111 Beach Drive, just south of the hospital.
“This will dramatically improve the patient experience for cancer infusion services in a more convenient and contemporary outpatient setting with dedicated parking and a separate entrance,” reads the announcement. (Scroll down for interior renderings.)
The center will feature a 22-bay infusion center, 12 physician offices and 20 exam rooms, with flexible space that could be converted to accommodate for additional growth, according to Good Sam.
It will also allow the hospital to centralize its cancer care, combining the infusion services of six medical oncologists at two separate offices into one nearby location with additional pharmacy and laboratory-related services.
Genetic counseling, social work, nutrition and dietary services will also be featured, with patient navigators to assist with scheduling appointments and coordinating care.
The hospital is hoping to start gutting and clearing out the inside space in December or January.
