A 66-year-old Holbrook man died Thursday night after a driver struck him on Broadway Avenue and and kept going, police said.
Mario Corvasce was in the roadway in front of 780 Broadway Avenue about 9:15 p.m. when he was hit by a southbound vehicle. Suffolk Police said the driver did not remain at the scene.
Corvasce was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.
Suffolk Police’s Major Case Unit is investigating the crash.
The fatal hit-and-run comes continues a troubling trend for traffic safety on Long Island.
A 2024 report by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found that traffic deaths are rising across New York. But Long Island stands out: In 2022, Nassau and Suffolk accounted for 20 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities statewide, with 254 people killed across the two counties.
Suffolk County alone accounted for 164 of those deaths, more than any other county in the state that year. Traffic deaths on Long Island have increased by 40 percent since 2019, according to the state report.
Hit-and-run crashes compound the danger. Federal data indicates that roughly one in four pedestrian fatalities involves a hit-and-run driver.
Other recent pedestrian deaths in Suffolk include an unidentified man fatally struck by a westbound SUV on Middle Country Road in Selden in early May, and a man killed in a hit-and-run in Copiague — a 19-year-old Copiague man was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality in connection with that death.

Earlier this month, a Deer Park driver was arrested and charged in a West Islip hit-and-run wreck that injured a 13-year-old boy. And in May, a West Sayville woman was arrested in a hit-and-run in Sayville that left a 60-year-old Sayville woman hospitalized; the victim was out for a jog.
