Riders rescued after Adventureland’s new Wave Twister breaks down

|

Sixteen people, including several children, were rescued Friday night after Adventureland’s newest ride broke down with riders aboard, Suffolk County police said.

First Precinct officers responded to the East Farmingdale amusement park at 7:25 p.m. following a 911 call reporting that people were stuck on the Wave Twister.

Emergency Services Unit officers and members of multiple fire departments worked to safely remove all 16 riders. The final person was brought down at 10:39 p.m., more than three hours after the initial call.

No injuries were reported, police said.

The riders included a 5-year-old and their 40-year-old parent. The remaining children were between 8 and 12 years old, according to police.

It was not immediately clear what caused the ride to stop.

The Wave Twister opened earlier this year in Adventureland’s Legacy Corner and was promoted by the park and its manufacturer, RES Rides, as the first attraction of its kind in the world.

The custom-built ride features two 10-passenger gondolas that rotate while traveling along a nearly 280-foot track and climbing more than 50 feet into the air. Its combination of height, movement and spinning is designed to simulate the feeling of riding ocean waves.

The ride was designed as a family-friendly attraction. Children at least 36 inches tall can ride with an adult, while guests 48 inches and taller can ride alone.
