After 40 years, the Sandspit Marina’s restrooms were long due for an upgrade.
The Town of Brookhaven demolished a four-decade-old bathroom building last week at the Sandspit Marina in Patchogue on Thursday as part of an effort to renovate the area.
In its wake will be a new restroom facility, which Town of Brookhaven Councilman Neil Foley said will take about four months to finish.
“The bathrooms and the building were in bad shape,” he said. “The last couple of years we’ve put a lot of money into Sandspit. The last piece of the puzzle was the building.”
The capital improvement project will also see a new pump-out station for boats, an alternative to across the bay at Davis Park.
The new restrooms, accessible to mariners and ferry travelers, and the pump-out station, follow the town’s previous renovations at the marina over the past five years.
Foley said the town’s first objective was to renovate the ferry building. From there, the town built a jetty, renovated the bulkhead along the Great South Bay, built a new lighthouse and repaved the parking lot.
“We like to renovate all our areas every 5 to 10 years,” he said. “They bear the elements. When you have structures near saltwater, they take a beating over the years.”
