A Sachem North High School student is competing in a national contest to become “The Greatest Baker” and win $20,000.
Kaelin Garrett, 15, of Lake Grove is currently in fourth place in the 2024 edition of the competition presented by celebrity baker Buddy Valastro, aka the “Cake Boss.” The winner of the vote-driven contest will be announced later this week, with voting ending at 10 p.m. on Thursday.
The sophomore says she has been baking as far back as she can remember.
“I always loved cooking and baking,” she says in her bio page of the contest’s website. “When my grandmother was diagnosed with a severe allergy, I baked her favorite cake from scratch.
“When my twin siblings were diagnosed with multiple severe allergies, I made it my mission to bake them whatever I could so they wouldn’t feel left out,” added Kaelin, who most enjoys baking pretzels and breads.

The Greatest Baker is an annual contest that lets home bakers across the country compete for the title of “The Greatest Baker.” Along with the monetary prize, “The Greatest Baker” will share their work in Bake from Scratch magazine and have the opportunity to meet and speak with Valastro.
Kaelin said that if she wins, the prize money will go toward paying for baking school and buying her first car. Her proud mother Dawnmarie told Greater Long Island that her daughter “is an amazing big sister” and has “always had a passion for baking.”
Proceeds from the contest go to the B+ Foundation, which provides emotional and financial support to children battling cancer.
