Michael Hynes, the former superintendent of Patchogue-Medford and Port Washington school districts, pleaded guilty Thursday in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead in connection with a drunken driving crash in Sayville that seriously injured a motorcyclist last year.
The crash occurred Nov. 24 when Hynes, 53, was driving northbound on Railroad Avenue and attempted to turn left onto Depot Street, striking a southbound motorcycle operated by 63‑year‑old Alberto Fernandez of Sayville.
Fernandez was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries; Hynes suffered minor injuries.
At the scene, police reported, Hynes had bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech and unsteady footing. He was charged with driving while intoxicated. Later, his charges were upgraded to vehicular assault.
He pleaded guilty on Thursday to a felony count of vehicular assault, court records indicate.
Hynes’ sentencing is Feb. 3
Hynes had announced his resignation from the Port Washington district earlier in November 2024, with his last day originally set for Dec. 13. The district accelerated that departure after his arrest.
Under Thursday’s plea, Hynes will appear for sentencing on Feb. 3 in Judge John Collins’ courtroom. His defense attorney, John Halverson, said Hynes is expected to receive five years of probation, according to Newsday.
