Sayville native Jack Coan is staying in Saskatchewan for at least one more season.
The Canadian Football League’s defending Grey Cup champions announced Tuesday that they have inked a deal with the former Hansen Award winner on a one-year contract extension.
Coan, 27, served as a backup quarterback in the Roughriders’ championship run last November; Saskatchewan won its first Grey Cup title since 2013.
The Long Island Laser stepped up during the last two games of the regular season, after the Roughriders had clinched home-field advantage in the playoffs, earning significant playing time, including short-yardage situations.
Coan said he is looking forward to contributing to Saskatchewan’s chase of back-to-back Grey Cups.
“I’m super excited about signing back with Saskatchewan. The people there are what make it special, and one of the main reasons I chose to go back,” Coan told Greater Long Island on Tuesday. “The coaches, team, and community are amazing to be apart of. I’m excited to keep developing in a familiar offense along with familiar teammates around me.”
Coan’s football journey has been marked by perseverance.
A standout at Sayville, he went on to play at Wisconsin for three season, before transferring to Notre Dame for his final collegiate season.
Despite strong college performances, Coan went undrafted in the NFL, spending time in tryouts with several teams and briefly playing in the XFL before joining the CFL.
Since arriving in Saskatchewan for the 2024 season, Coan steadily has earned the trust of coaches and teammates.
