Babylon extends metered parking hours on village streets

|

Heads up, Babylon drivers — the village’s new metered parking rules are now in effect.

As of Monday, April 7, parking meters across the Village of Babylon are enforced until 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Previously, enforcement ended at 6 p.m. Parking remains free on Sundays and holidays.

According to Newsday, meter violations carry a fine of about $35.

The hourly rate hasn’t changed — it’s still 25 cents per hour with a two-hour maximum for on-street parking. That rate was increased from 10 cents back in 2022, after remaining unchanged for more than two decades.

For longer stays, the village offers seven municipal lots with extended parking options.

New signage is being installed at meters throughout the village to reflect the later enforcement hours. Officials say changes to the municipal lot hours are also in the works.

The village first announced the extended enforcement hours on March 31.

Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams told Newsday that the expanded hours are part of an effort to reduce potential tax increases in the upcoming budget.
