Broadway Joe continues to deliver, even long after his guaranteed 1969 Super Bowl victory.
Around eight months ago, the iconic New York Jets quarterback launched his Joe Namath Foundation to raise money for neurological research and children’s charities.
And on Saturday, July 14, the nonprofit had its biggest event to date, and it happened to be in Bay Shore.
The fundraiser was held at board member and Bay Shore resident Fred O’Meally’s house, who was also celebrating his 60th birthday.
“We’re all friends with Fred and we have a common cause, to help other people,” Namath told GreaterBayshore.
Around 300 people showed up for the festivities, with all the proceeds — around $100,000 — going to local and nationwide charities.
Namath, with his bright smile, kept busy throughout the party as he greeted guests, took photos and signed autographs.
“Joe is one of the most caring and giving individuals I’ve ever met,” said O’Meally, who himself is involved in other nonprofits, such as Bay Shore’s Special PAL.
Throughout his life, Namath has committed himself to giving back. According to his website, over the last 30 years, he has given over $100 million to charity, including $33 million to the March of Dimes.
Broadway Joe’s next fundraising event is a golf outing, which is being planned for this upcoming fall at the Bethpage Golf Course.
