A day after a garbage carting agency that serviced 20% of the town carting districts announced it would immediately stop providing pickup services, the Town of Brookhaven said it had entered into emergency contracts with four local companies in time for Thursday pickups.
Town spokesman Kevin Molloy said the firms have previously provided or currently provide residential garbage pickup within Brookhaven.
These companies will begin immediately to provide residents with uninterrupted service, Molloy said.
“The priority was to have the refuse removed, especially for the holiday season,” Molloy said. “The waste management commissioner [Christopher Andrade] and staff worked through yesterday and today to ensure that these emergency contracts would be able to be put into effect.”
The affected communities by Quickway carting’s announcement yesterday that it would stop providing services — one year into a multiyear contract — include portions of Shoreham, Rocky Point, Port Jefferson Station, Farmingville, East Patchogue and Manorville.
All residents who have regular Thursday garbage pickup should put their cans out curbside this evening, the town said.
Because they will be new to these service areas, the town asks residents in the affected areas to be patient as they learn these routes. Call 451-TOWN if your garbage has not been collected by late afternoon.
Brookhaven said in a release it “intends to pursue every available legal option as a result of this carter’s unacceptable actions.”
Quickway has not responded to several calls for comment.
