The Town of Brookhaven, along with the other four western Suffolk towns – Babylon, Islip, Huntington and Smithtown – announced that they have decided to keep community pools closed this summer as COVID-19 continues to spread on Long Island.
This includes Centereach Pool, the popular park with a swimming pool and waterslide on the corner of Hawkins Road and Hammond Road in Centereach.
Brookhaven’s spray parks, including the one at Shirley Beach, however, will open on June 27, according to a town spokesman.
Other towns may keep their spray parks closed, according to a news release.
“After much consideration, we, unfortunately, do not believe that we can make our pools and spray parks available this summer in a manner that is safe for both our residents and employees,” said Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “I know that I speak for all Town Board members and our Parks & Recreation Department when I say that it breaks our heart to make this announcement, knowing how much our residents love these facilities and rely on them to cool off in the hot summer months. It was a difficult decision but one that we feel is in the best interest of protecting public health, which is our utmost priority as we continue to battle COVID-19.”
