Chicago Bears sign E. Northport’s Damien Caffrey following 2023 NFL Draft

|

East Northport’s Damien Caffrey scores big-time with his recent signing by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft on Saturday, per his Twitter.

The 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end out of Stony Brook University boasts impressive blocking abilities and caught seven passes for 78 yards during his two seasons with the team.

Caffrey spent his first three years of college at Long Island University before transferring to Stony Brook, where he stood out as a star player. In his senior season at John Glenn High School, Caffrey had an impressive senior season, with 24 receptions for 450 yards and six touchdowns.

While the Bears have already signed veteran tight end Robert Tonyan to a one-year contract this offseason, Caffrey is the only rookie tight end signed by the team this draft season.

The team is also returning starter Cole Kmet, who had a career-best seven touchdowns last season.

The Long Islander will be competing for a backup position against Chase Allen and Jake Tonges, who have both spent time on the team’s practice squad last season, as they vie to be among the three active tight ends typically included on an NFL team’s roster.
