Police are continuing an investigation into how a dozen students at William Floyd Middle School in Moriches got their hands on marijuana edibles at school on Monday and became sickened after ingesting them.
“Seventh Precinct Crime Section officers are investigating,” a police department spokesperson told Greater Long Island. “No charges are being filed at this time.”
On Monday morning, authorities and emergency responders were called to the school after a student distributed edible marijuana gummies to classmates, sickening “approximately” a dozen students, police and school officials said. Suffolk County Police initially said on Monday that no criminal charges had been filed and that discipline would be handled at the school level, police said.
Police and local EMTs responded to the Moriches school about 10:10 a.m., delivering care and assistance to the affected students, alongside the school nurse. Eleven of the students — who were all aged either 13 or 14 — were taken to local hospitals for medical evaluation, while one was released to a parent, officials said.
“We are grateful to our first responders for their quick response, thankful that the students will be treated, and hopeful that they will recover quickly,” the district said in a statement.
