The Fire Island National Seashore, a unit of the National Parks Service, will host a pair of webinars to share information with the public about the park’s evaluation and ongoing project related to its off-road vehicle driving program.
The two webinars, which will take place on Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m. and on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m., will provide opportunities for the public to learn more about the project, ask questions of NPS staff and learn how to provide formal written comments through the planning, environment and public comment website.
Both proceedings will feature a presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session.
FINS said in a press release that the development, access, technology and use of Fire Island has dramatically changed since the seashore was established in 1964. Meanwhile, its current off-road driving regulations date back to 1987. FINS issues special-use permits to residents for driving and other services.
FINS said in the release that it is taking a hard look at the existing regulations to identify changes that can be made to create a more efficient and less burdensome driving permit program for both the NPS and community members.
