HAROLD GUBNITSKY
Though the 75-year-old Brownsville, Brooklyn, native does more than sculpt wood at his Moriches home on Montauk Highway, he displayed only wood pieces Saturday.
“You put too many different things up there and people get confused,” he said.
Everything he had on display on Bellport Lane was carved from black walnut.
“You start with a chainsaw, rough it out, and in the end you’re using a very fine sandpaper to finish it off,” he said of the sculpting process.
Aside from his statue-liked carvings, he also had walking sticks on display Saturday.
When asked what type of people buy the sticks, he answered with a laugh:
“People who like walking sticks.”
Gubnitsky was also featured in a New York Times article in 2005.
