Great Photos: Alive After Five’s triumphant return to Patchogue

|

In spite of a rainy first hour, hundreds of people converged on downtown Patchogue to partake in the village’s first Alive After Five in three years.

“That was the worst rain we’ve had at Alive After Five in seven years,” David Kennedy, the director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, said about 6 p.m. “In the past, the rain, we saw coming. I did not see this coming.”

“I think in about thirty minutes, we’ll really get going,” he added. “It was a hot day, so hopefully it cooled things off.”

Kennedy was surprised how early this year’s crowd swarmed the event, saturating Main St. by 5:30p.m., just in time for the passing showers, which forced people to seek refuge indoors or under tents. Once the skies cleared, at least 1,000 Long Islanders passed through Patchogue’s premiere summer event.

What stopped the rain? It might have been O El Amor, Long Island’s notoriously masked cover band. The sun overpowered the stormy weather as the band played Hall and Oats “Kiss On My List.” The fearsome four-piece group was just one of the many performers playing on the street and indoors alongside the festivities throughout the night.

Carnival performers and face painters also entertained, while food and dessert trucks and Patchogue’s many bars and restaurants fed the fun-loving horde.
