Hicks Nurseries flower show in Westbury in full bloom through March 30

|

The clock is ticking as Hicks Nurseries’ immersive 35th Annual Flower Show comes to an end this Sunday. The free display is open to all visitors.

Since March 6, the Westbury garden center has sprung to life, offering an artistic, colorful and spring-themed flower show inside its giant store. As shoppers browse, they are welcome to view all of the themed decor and thousands of flowers and plants.

“This year’s theme is Spring is in the Air,” said the flower show’s designer Ken Muellers. “We have eight different gardens within the show. They’re variations of themes about spring.”

The garden names include Spring Renewal, Spring Into Action; Up Up and Away; Spring Fling; April Showers; Garden Party; Spring Takes Flight; and Bugs, Bugs, Bugs.

The process

“It begins with some brainstorming about what the overall theme will be and then coming up with the various gardens,” Muellers said. “And then they’re assigned to different designers in our office here who flesh out the details on each of the gardens.

“We then review it to make sure everything is going in the right direction, and once we’re confident that we have a direction, we start to work on acquiring plants and getting the props worked out,” he continued.

When the show started years back, Muellers said, it was more of a trade show where vendors showcased their products, such as fertilizer. But, over time, it has developed into a full-fledged garden show.

Many people enjoy viewing the gardens to get ideas for their very own gardens at home, while children are encouraged to embark on a scavenger hunt provided by Hicks.

The annual Flower Show, located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury, runs through Sunday. It’s open each day until then, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
