Inspiring Shirley body builder needs your votes in Muscle & Fitness contest

|

A Shirley dad and U.S. Air Force veteran is a finalist in Muscle & Fitness magazine’s “Mr. Health & Fitness” contest.

But time is running out on his chances.

James “Jimmy” Dorsa, 43, has until 10 p.m. Thursday, July 8, to make it to the competition’s next round of voting. Right now, he sits at ninth place in his group and needs to climb four spots to remain eligible for the top prize of $20,000 and a two-page spread in an upcoming issue of the popular fitness magazine.

Dorsa, who has four boys, is a type 1 diabetic physique competitor and a transplant survivor who lived off a feeding tube for six months. He told Muscle & Fitness that the ability to exercise was taken from him for seven years while he battled chronic pancreatitis and underwent life-saving surgery.

“I lived off a feeding tube for 6 months, had to walk with cane for a year, and couldn’t workout,” he said, on his Muscle & Fitness bio page. “I was depressed and self-conscious so I made a promise to myself I would get my health back and never look back … I now strive to motivate and inspire others to not give up and show them it can be done.”

If he wins the top prize, he said he will put the money toward his children’s college education and a “way over due” family vacation.
