Lake Grove native Joe Scally named to U.S. World Cup roster

Long Island will be well-represented on soccer’s biggest stage this summer.

Lake Grove native Joe Scally was officially named Tuesday to the U.S. Men’s National Team roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, earning his second straight selection to the sport’s premier international tournament.

The 23-year-old defender has become a key piece for the American side, as well with his German Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he has emerged as one of the top young U.S. defenders playing in Europe.

Scally started 31 of 35 games this season, scoring two goals with three assists.

The Sachem North High School graduate first burst onto the international scene as a teenager after rising through the New York City FC academy system. He made the U.S. World Cup roster in 2022 as the youngest player on the squad and has since grown into a more experienced and versatile option capable of playing multiple positions along the back line.

Now, the Long Islander will again have the chance to compete with the world watching — this time with the tournament being hosted closer to home — in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The United States opens World Cup play June 12.

Scally graduated from Sachem North in 2020, but he didn’t play soccer for the Arrows. Instead, he competed with NYCFC Academy and signed his first professional contract at 15.
