A sinkhole opened like a trapdoor on a westbound lane of the Long Island Expressway in Melville on Thursday, swallowing the front half of a gray Honda Accord and shutting down multiple lanes in a closure officials expect will last until deep into Friday afternoon.
The 1:15 p.m. collapse caused a crater roughly 10 feet wide and eight feet deep — in the right lane near Route 110, a Suffolk Police spokesperson said. Cops noted that the pavement gave way without warning. No injuries were reported.

Police said two westbound lanes were immediately closed at Exit 49N, and a third lane was later taken out of service as the Honda sat nose-first in the big hole.
Traffic backed up quickly as crews secured the scene, with westbound delays stretching for miles.
