A couple of Mount Sinai buddies, calling themselves Team Glani, took down all challengers in the Labor Day weekend cornhole tournament at Cedar Beach hosted by Brookhaven Town.
Team Glani walked away with bragging rights, gold medals, and a couple of new beach coolers as prizes.
All summer, Brookhaven Town has been hosting cornhole tournaments at Tiki Joe’s in Mount Sinai. According to the town website, three double elimination tournaments were held, one each on Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend and Labor Day weekend.
On Sunday, friends Glenn Edlund and Lani Bohne joined up as Team Glani (formed from a combination of their first names), ending up as first-place winners in the last tournament of the season.
According to Edlund, the duo went into the double-elimination championship round after going undefeated the entire day, facing off against a team they had previously beaten.
“They needed to beat us twice to win,” Edlund told GreaterPortJeff.
Making things interesting, Team Glani lost the first game.
“We won the second game,” he proclaimed.
The winners left with a cache of prizes.
“A rolling Corona cooler, t-shirts, sunglasses and of course the medal.”
Cornhole has become a popular sport indoors as well. Recently Cornhole of America, an indoor facility, opened in Port Jefferson Station.
More than 20 teams took part in the games, paying an entry fee of $20 each for the drop-in tournament. On Sunday, the weather was sunny, hitting a high of about 75 degrees, a perfect day for some outdoor sports. The games started at 3 p.m.
“It was a fun way to spend four hours on the beach,” said Edlund.
