Navy building a submarine named USS Long Island

A new submarine will bear the name USS Long Island, U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro has announced.

During an unveiling Thursday on the deck of the USS Wasp at Pier 88 in Manhattan, Del Toro expressed gratitude for the commitment and bravery displayed by Long Island residents across various historical conflicts.

Construction will begin soon on the submarine. Del Toro acknowledged Long Islanders’ pivotal role in the nation’s founding, fighting alongside George Washington, as well as their significant contributions during World War I and World War II.

“Long Islanders have stood up to the call to duty, whether it’s serving with George Washington or throughout all the many different conflicts of our nation’s history,” Del Toro said. “And (this) is to them, to their memory, to their service, to their commitment.”

The USS Long Island submarine is not the first Navy vessel to be named after the region. The original USS Long Island (CVE-1), an escort carrier, played a vital role during World War II. It safeguarded the United States’ West Coast and actively participated in the Allied Forces’ Guadalcanal campaign.
