Payless ShoeSource confirmed yesterday that would be closing 2,100 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and start liquidation sales Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Nearby, the move will impact its location in the South Port Shopping Center in Shirley.

The company is also closing its e-commerce operations.

Topeka, Kansas-based Payless.com is no longer accepting online orders, but its store locator was still working Saturday.

“We expect all stores to remain open until at least the end of March and the majority will remain open until May,” the company said in a statement to USA Today.

The company previously filed for bankruptcy protection in 2017 and closed 673 stores.

Another victim to the downturn in brick-and-mortar shopping was Toys “R” Us, which went into liquidation last year and also had a small store in the South Port Shopping Center. According to a New York Times story, that retailer is embarking on a revival pushed on by hedge funds that own its debt and control its intellectual property.

Payless said the liquidation doesn’t affect its franchise operations or its Latin American stores.
