Port Jeff boys, girls varsity lax players host first-ever youth camps

|

Port Jefferson High School student athletes Connor Kaminska, Thomas Mark and Billy Scannell are already helping grow the district’s still-fledgling lacrosse program.

The three, who are the captains for the boy’s varsity team, recently led a youth clinic for more than 75 students from grades kindergarten through sixth grade.

They were a part of the school’s first lacrosse program which began in 2011.

Being the first generation of lacrosse players in Port Jeff, they didn’t have older athletes to look up to in the community.

“Seeing the amount of kids that showed up for the clinic brought a huge smile to my face because it shows how far this program has come in a short amount of time,” said Mark. “Being on the first varsity lacrosse team here at Port Jeff, I now know leaving this team that there lays a lot of success ahead in the future.”

In the camp, which was held at Scraggy Fields, the boy’s team worked with girls varsity lacrosse team to teach the basics of passing, shooting and scooping ground balls.

“The event was highly rewarding, not just for the athletes involved, but also the varsity athletes who helped run the event,” said Taylor Forstell, the head coach for the boy’s varsity lacrosse team.
