Earl L. Vandermeulen High School was just named one of the top schools nationwide.
Each year U.S. News & World Report ranks the top schools throughout the U.S., giving a Gold Medal Status to the best schools. To earn the distinction, the high school was among the 2.4 percent of eligible schools.
In order to achieve Gold status, the news organization ranks the schools using strict criteria.
“Top-ranked schools succeed in three main areas: exceeding expectations on state proficiency tests, offering challenging coursework and graduating their students,” read a statement by Anita Narayan, managing editor of Education at U.S. News.
Overall, the Port Jefferson School District school was ranked 55th in New York State and 20,582 nationally.
“We are honored to receive this distinction,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano said. “In addition to the determination of our high school administrators and educators in leading our students in a high-quality education, they are committed to preparing them for continued academic successes in the future.”
This is the fourth award won by Port Jeff High School this academic year.
The school earned a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, a Reward School designation by New York State’s Education Department, and Principal Christine Austen was named the Person of the Year by TBR News Media.
