Port Jeff middle schoolers raise over $2K for child cancer research

|

Port Jefferson middle schoolers set out this year to raise $2,018 for children suffering with blood cancer.

They exceeded their goal by far, and in less than two months.

Since January, children in the Port Jeff Middle School Student Council began their fundraising efforts. They held bake sales, sold stickers and held a “Pajama Friday,” during which students and faculty paid $5 each to wear PJ’s to school.

In total, the group raised $2,766 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Pennies for Patients” campaign.

“It’s such a pleasure to not only see our students engage in helping others but our whole school community come together to support their efforts,” said Allison Giannusa, an adviser and English teacher at the middle school.

The fundraiser also brought out some friendly competition among the students.

Philip Giannusa’s eighth-period class came in first place, earning the highest total ($575).
