Renowned engineer Andrea Goldsmith to lead Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University announced Wednesday that renowned engineer and academic leader Andrea Goldsmith will become the school’s seventh president this summer.

The State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Goldsmith, who will take the helm on Aug. 1.

Goldsmith will take over from Stony Brook’s interim president, Richard McCormick, who began serving in the role after Maurie McInnis stepped down to become Yale University’s president.

Currently the dean of engineering and applied science at Princeton University, Goldsmith previously served as a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University. She holds 38 patents and has co-founded two technology companies, Plume WiFi and Quantenna.

“Stony Brook’s commitment to academic excellence, research innovation and social mobility resonates profoundly with my values,” said Goldsmith, who sits on the board of directors for Intel, Medtronic, Crown Castle Inc., and the Marconi Society and has advised the White House as a member of the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

“I look forward to getting to know the Stony Brook community and to working alongside Stony Brook’s exceptional faculty and staff to serve our students and build upon the university’s upward momentum to achieve new heights of success in education, research, service and global impact,” she added.

Goldsmith’s contributions to engineering and innovation have earned her induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the Wireless History Foundation Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

A greeting from the new president

Goldsmith has received numerous other honors, including the Marconi Prize, the IEEE Dresselhaus Medal and the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s Women of Influence Award.

“Stony Brook is known for its groundbreaking research and exceptional academic programs, ensuring that New Yorkers have access to affordable, high-quality public higher education,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said, in wake of the news of Goldsmith’s appointment.

“I would like to congratulate Dr. Goldsmith on her appointment as the next president of this prestigious university as I believe she will undoubtedly serve Stony Brook admirably,” Hochul added.

SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. highlighted Goldsmith’s broad experience as a researcher, entrepreneur and educator, calling her an ideal choice to lead Stony Brook into the future.

“Dr. Andrea Goldsmith’s vast experience as a dean, faculty member, and researcher at R1 universities, as a successful innovator, and as a committed educator and academic leader makes her an extraordinary choice to lead this esteemed SUNY institution to new heights,” King said.
