Sayville’s Jack Coan on fire in Notre Dame’s rivalry game with USC

|

Jack Coan wasn’t kidding.

Sayville’s hometown college football hero told GreaterSayville.com last Saturday that he was pumped up to be part of Notre Dame’s historic rivalry with USC this week. And here is tonight, looking as sharp as he’s looked all season and helping No. 13 Notre Dame jump out to a 17-3 halftime lead.

Coan has completed 14 of 19 passes for 135 yards, including a 4-yard scoring strike to Avery Davis that put the Irish up 7-0 over the Trojans. On the game’s opening drive, the graduate transfer from Wisconsin marched Notre Dame’s offense 74 yards on 13 plays. But the Irish came up empty when kicker Jonathan Doerer missed a 36-yard field goal attempt.

USC’s offense was threatening early in the second quarter, but Notre Dame linebacker Bo Bauer intercepted a deflected pass deep in Irish territory and returned it 79 yard to USC’s 4-yard line. It set up a 21-yard field goal by Doerer.

Coan completed 4 of 5 passes for 56 yards during the Irish’s second quarter touchdown drive that left Notre Dame up 17-3.
