Services announced for Happy Cat founder who died saving cats in Medford fire

|

Funeral services have been announced for Chris Arsenault, the founder of Happy Cat Sanctuary who died Monday trying to save the animals in his care from a devastating fire.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 9, at Fairchild Sons, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset. No additional details have been released regarding a formal funeral or other services for Arsenault, who was 65.

Meanwhile, a massive memorial service for the Port Washington native is in the works, with organizers seeking a venue capable of accommodating tens of thousands of people, said Arsenault’s friend and fellow animal rescuer Lisa Jaeger of Jaeger’s Run Animal Rescue.

The rescue and recovery effort at Happy Cat entered its fifth day on Friday, with teams of animal care workers still attempting find and trap more than a hundred cats who survived the blaze, some of which are severely burned.

More than 100 cats perished in the blaze.

Donors from across the world have given nearly $800,000 in total to various support drives on behalf of Happy Cat and the cats who survived the fire.

Arsenault had dedicated his life to rescuing cats ever since the passing in 2006 of his 24-year-old son, who died in a motorcycle accident. People near and far have been touched by his story, his devotion to rescuing cats and his bravery during Monday’s fire.
