The track at Smithtown High School West was buzzing with energy for 12 straight hours this past weekend — not for a race, but for a cause.
Students from both Smithtown High School East and West came together Saturday night into Sunday morning for the annual Relay for Life, raising more than $86,000 to support the American Cancer Society.
The overnight event served as the culmination of a year’s worth of fundraising and planning by students from both campuses. Participants formed teams and took turns walking the track throughout the night, symbolizing the message that “cancer never sleeps.”
Each team created themed campsites and raised additional funds by offering food, games, and goods to eventgoers — with all proceeds going toward their team’s overall donation goal.
The Smithtown Central School District praised the student-led effort, calling the turnout and dedication a powerful reflection of the community’s commitment to the cause. Watch a video recap of the night below.
