Tropical Smoothie Cafe is in the works at the Sunshine Square Mall in Medford.
With dozens of locations already on Long Island, this latest spot will feature a drive-thru — a new feature to the smoothie joints on Long Island, the first one opening in Rocky Point back in January.
Taking over for a vacant pad site that once was home to a bank, the franchisee’s engineer was at a Brookhaven Town planning board meeting in early March to review details of expected renovations.
Jaclyn Peranteau from Key Civil Engineering in Holtsville said that the project consists of interior construction work to convert the 2,955-square-foot stand-alone building into a restaurant.
On the agenda was a discussion about the change of use of the property from bank to the proposed restaurant. The plan also includes site modifications to the parking area for the drive-thru and existing variances for landscaping and parking that were previously approved for the site.
In a letter, the Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association said it found the proposed use for the new restaurant acceptable and will bring a needed vendor into the vacant site.
“We feel this development will be a good addition to Medford,” said civic president Brett Houdek.
The Sunshine Square Mall is experiencing some changes as of late. An IHOP is opening in the old Ruby Tuesday’s spot.
