Wave of support surges for 6-year-old Water Mill girl battling brain cancer

|

The Water Mill community has wrapped its arms around 6-year-old Scarlett Parry, as she continues to battle a rare and aggressive brain tumor.

A GoFundMe campaign for Scarlett has raised more than $225,000 from nearly 1,000 donations as of Sunday afternoon, according to the fundraising page.

Scarlett this year was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a fast-growing brain cancer. Over the summer, she “bravely underwent brain surgery” and that doctors were able to remove most of the tumor, her parents Susan and John Parry said on the GoFundMe page established this summer.

The procedure, they said, left her needing “intensive speech, occupational, and physical therapy to regain her strength and skills.” Her treatment plan includes radiation and chemotherapy, followed by months of recovery and rehabilitation.

“It’s more than any child should have to endure,” her parents wrote. “Scarlett has been incredibly brave and has been facing it all with such determination.”

Support for Scarlett extended beyond the online campaign this weekend. The Southampton Fire Department hosted a “Shave for Scarlett” event Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., where participants had their heads shaved in solidarity with the young girl.

The family said funds raised will help with medical bills, therapy and travel expenses for out-of-town treatments.

“Scarlett is a fighter, and with your help, she can return to the things she loves most, like riding bikes with her twin brother, Easton, and playing on the swings with her sister, Maddie,” Scarlett’s parents said.
