Expected wind, rain cancels the New Year’s Eve countdown in Patchogue

Patchogue Village is switching things up for its widely-popular New Year’s Eve celebration called Midnight on Main Street.
As previously reported, instead of its usual spot on East Main Street near the Capital One Plaza, this year’s festivities will happen on West Main Street near the new Blue Point Brewery.
“We targeted West Main Street as a good alternative because there is more open space,” David Kennedy, the executive director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, previously told GreaterPatchogue.
The ball countdown will take place at the intersection of West Avenue and West Main Street. And it will still happen at 9 p.m. to continue the tradition of being a family-friendly bash.
“We love that time (9 p.m.) because its early enough for families to enjoy it,” said Kennedy. “It is also a great way to get your night started–after celebrating with Patchogue– you can celebrate with the rest of the world in town.”
Below is everything else you need to know before heading to Patchogue :
- From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., West Main Street will be closed from River Avenue to Railroad Avenue. West Avenue will be from South Street to Lake Street.
- Music starts for the outdoor dance party at 7 p.m., with master of ceremonies Charlie Lombardo of JVC Broadcasting on hand to guide revelers through the night.
- The big countdown, which includes a huge LED ball and a Fireworks by Grucci grand illuminations show, happens on the corner of West Avenue and West Main Street.
- There will be free New Year’s Eve hats and noisemakers from the chamber, available up and down West Main Street.
- A few food trucks will be on hand, as well as some vendors selling additional items.
- The chamber’s restaurant committee will be announcing the winner for its Eating for 30 Days in Patchogue raffle baskets. Click here for additional details; tickets are now available in all the local restaurants for $20 each and help fund the night.
- The ball itself is a 4-foot lucite geodesic sphere, decked with gleaming LED lights and made by North Star Signs & Neon Inc. in Patchogue.
- This is a rain-or-shine event.
- The ball doesn’t drop, like it does in Times Square, and here’s why:
“The ball rises because Patchogue is a rising community,” said Kennedy. “From the street level it’s much more dramatic to see it rise, as opposed to drop. Times Square is different because you’re looking up so high.”
