LI2Day walk

Lynne Senzatimore participated in the annual LI2DAY 13.1k walk three times even before she moved from Seaford to Center Moriches in 2012.

She had been in other walks dedicated to fighting breast cancer, but found that only a portion of the money stayed local. Senzatimore, 70, who hasn’t had breast cancer but has lost friends to it, said there are so many walks that she wanted to dedicate her energy an organization that keeps the funds on Long Island.

This year, Senzatimore will be joining about 300 others in the 16th annual June 8 walk, which starts and ends at Smith Point County Park Dare area and goes up and down William Floyd Parkway. She has raised more than $3,000 with the help of family and friends.

“It’s been a wonderful experience,” said Senzatimore, who has been inspired by the walkers with cancer and is particularly moved by a ceremony following the walk in which survivors are recognized.

Her husband, Anthony, is a crew volunteer.

LI2DAY was founded in 2004 in response to the need for funding of community-based organizations that provide assistance to Long Islanders with breast cancer.

Registration for the walk ends on June 2.

In 2014, LI2DAY, which includes the separate Orangetheory Fitness Hope Runs Here 5K Run/Walk on June 9 that started three years ago, expanded its mission to include funding for all cancers. Funds raised go to local grassroots breast cancer and other women’s cancer organizations, breast cancer research and the LI2Day Scholarship Fund.

LI2DAY has raised over $7 million to assist Long Islanders with medical expenses, transportation, prosthetics, wigs, physical therapy, child care, direct financial payments, programs for exercise and nutrition, retreats, counseling, research and education.

“They’re really a wonderful organization,” Senzatimore said.
